Exercise 8, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 36

Let ff be a mapping from R\mathbf{R} to itself such that the set C of points of R\mathbf{R} where ff is continuous is dense in R\mathbf{R}, and such that the complement A of C is also dense. Show that the set D of points of C where ff is right differentiable is meagre. (For each integer n, let EnE_n be the set of points a∈Ra \in \mathbf{R} such that there exist two points x,yx, y such that 0<x−a<1/n,0<y−a<1/n0 < x - a < 1/n, 0 < y - a < 1/n and

f(x)−f(a)x−a−f(y)−f(a)y−a>1. \frac{f(x) - f(a)}{x - a} - \frac{f(y) - f(a)}{y - a} > 1.

Show that the interior of EnE_n is dense in R\mathbf{R}. For this, note that for every open nonempty interval II in R\mathbf{R} there is a point b∈I∩Ab \in I \cap A; show that for a<ba < b and b−ab - a sufficiently small one has a∈Ena \in E_n.)
