Exercise 10, § 2

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 38

Let ff and gg be two finite real functions, strictly positive, continuous and differentiable on an open interval II. Show that if f′f' and g′g' are strictly positive and f′/g′f'/g' is strictly increasing on II, then either f/gf/g is strictly increasing on II, or else there exists a number c ∈ I such that f/gf/g is strictly decreasing for x≤cx \leq c and strictly increasing for x≥cx \geq c (note that if one has f′(x)/g′(x)<f(x)/g(x)f'(x)/g'(x) < f(x)/g(x) then also

f′(y)/g′(y)<f(y)/g(y) f'(y)/g'(y) < f(y)/g(y)
for all y<xy < x).
