Exercise 3, § 2
Functions of a Real Variable, I, 37
a) Let be the triadic Cantor set (Gen. Top., IV, p. 338), let be the contiguous intervals of with length (), and the closed intervals of length whose union is the complement of the union of the for . Let be a number such that ; for each we denote by the continuous increasing function on which is equal to 0 for , constant on each of the intervals for , is affine linear on each of the intervals () and such that on each of the interiors of these last intervals. Show that the series with general term is uniformly convergent on , that its sum is a function which admits a right derivative (finite or not) everywhere in , and that one has at every point of distinct from the left-hand endpoints of the contiguous intervals .
b) Let be a continuous increasing map of onto itself, constant on each of the intervals (Gen. Top., IV, p. 403, exerc. 9). If , show that admits a right derivative equal to at every point of .
