Exercise 6, § 2

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 38

On the interval I=[−1, +1]I = [-1,\ +1] consider the vector function f\mathbf{f}, with values in R2\mathbf{R}^2, defined as follows: f(t)=(0, 0)\mathbf{f}(t) = (0,\ 0) for −1≤t≤0-1 \leq t \leq 0;

f(t)=(t2sin⁡1t, t2cos⁡1t) \mathbf{f}(t) = \left( t^2 \sin \frac{1}{t},\ t^2 \cos \frac{1}{t} \right)

for 0≤t≤10 \leq t \leq 1. Show that f\mathbf{f} is differentiable on ]−1, +1[]-1,\ +1[ but that the image of this interval under f′\mathbf{f}' is not a connected set in R2\mathbf{R}^2 (cf. exerc. 4 c)).
