Exercise 14, § 3

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 44

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let f\mathbf{f} be a function which is n−1n - 1 times differentiable on an interval II containing 0, and let fn\mathbf{f}_n be the vector function defined for x≠0x \neq 0 on II by the relation

f(x)=f(0)+f′(0)x1!+f′′(0)x22!+⋯+f(n−1)(0)xn−1(n−1)!+fn(x)xn. \mathbf{f}(x) = \mathbf{f}(0) + \mathbf{f}'(0) \frac{x}{1!} + \mathbf{f}''(0) \frac{x^2}{2!} + \cdots + \mathbf{f}^{(n-1)}(0) \frac{x^{n-1}}{(n-1)!} + \mathbf{f}_n(x)x^n.

a) Show that if f\mathbf{f} has an (n+p)th(n+p)^{th} derivative at the point 0 then fn\mathbf{f}_n has a pthp^{th} derivative at the point 0 and an (n+p−1)th(n+p-1)^{th} derivative at all points of a neighbourhood of 0 distinct from 0; moreover, one has fn(k)(0)=k!(n+k)!f(n+k)(0)\mathbf{f}_n^{(k)}(0) = \frac{k!}{(n+k)!} \mathbf{f}^{(n+k)}(0) for 0≤k≤p0 \leq k \leq p, and fn(p+k)(x)xk\mathbf{f}_n^{(p+k)}(x)x^k tends to 0 with xx, for 1≤k≤n−11 \leq k \leq n-1 (express the derivatives of fn\mathbf{f}_n with the help of the Taylor expansions of the successive derivatives of f\mathbf{f}, and use prop. 6 of I, p. 18).

b) Conversely, let fn\mathbf{f}_n be a vector function admitting an (n+p−1)th(n+p-1)^{th} derivative on a neighbourhood of 0 in II, and such that fn(p+k)(x)xk\mathbf{f}_n^{(p+k)}(x)x^k has a limit for 0≤k≤n−10 \leq k \leq n-1. Show that the function fn(x)xn\mathbf{f}_n(x)x^n has an (n+p−1)th(n+p-1)^{th} derivative on II; if, further, fn\mathbf{f}_n admits a pthp^{th} derivative at the point 0, then fn(x)xn\mathbf{f}_n(x)x^n admits an (n+p)th(n+p)^{th} derivative at the point 0.

c) Suppose that II is symmetric with respect to 0 and that f\mathbf{f} is even (f(−x)=f(x)\mathbf{f}(-x) = \mathbf{f}(x) on II). Show, with the help of a), that if f\mathbf{f} is 2n2n times differentiable on II, then there exists a function gg defined and nn times differentiable on II, such that f(x)=g(x2)\mathbf{f}(x) = g(x^2) on II.
