Exercise 15, § 3

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 44

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let II be an open interval in R\mathbf{R}, and f\mathbf{f} a vector function defined and continuous on II; suppose that there are nn vector functions gig_i (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n) defined on II, and such that the function of xx

1hn(f(x+h)−f(x)−∑p=1nhpp!gp(x)) \frac{1}{h^n} \left( \mathbf{f}(x+h) - \mathbf{f}(x) - \sum_{p=1}^n \frac{h^p}{p!} \mathbf{g}_p(x) \right)

tends uniformly to 0 on every compact interval contained in II as hh tends to 0

a) We put fp(x,h)=Δpf(x;h,h,…,h)\mathbf{f}_p(x,h) = \Delta^p \mathbf{f}(x;h,h,\ldots,h) (I, p. 40, exerc. 6). Show that, for 1≤p≤n1 \leq p \leq n, (1/hp)fp(x,h)(1/h^p) \mathbf{f}_p(x,h) tends uniformly to gp(x)\mathbf{g}_p(x) on every compact subinterval of II as hh tends to 0, and that the gp\mathbf{g}_p are continuous on II (prove this successively for p=n,p=n−1p = n, p = n-1, etc.)

b) Deduce from this that f\mathbf{f} has a continuous nthn^{th} derivative and that f(p)=gp\mathbf{f}^{(p)} = \mathbf{g}_p for 1≤p≤n1 \leq p \leq n (taking account of the relation fp+1(x,h)=f(x+h,h)−fp(x,h)\mathbf{f}_{p+1}(x,h) = \mathbf{f}(x+h,h) - \mathbf{f}_p(x,h)).
