Functions of a Real Variable, I, 45

a) Let ff be a vector function having derivatives of all orders on an open interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R}. Suppose that, on II, one has ∥f(n)(x)∥≤an!rn\|f^{(n)}(x)\| \leq a n! r^n, where aa and rr are two numbers >0> 0 and independent of xx and nn; show that at each point x0x_0 the "Taylor series" with general term (1/n!)f(n)(x0)(x−x0)n(1/n!) f^{(n)}(x_0) (x - x_0)^n is convergent, and has sum f(x)f(x) on some neighbourhood of x0x_0.

b) Conversely, if the Taylor series for ff at a point x0x_0 converges on a neighbourhood of x0x_0 there exist two numbers aa and rr (depending on x0x_0) such that ∥f(n)(x0)∥≤a.n!rn\|f^{(n)}(x_0)\| \leq a . n! r^n for every integer n>0n > 0.

c) Deduce from a) and exerc. 16 b) that if, on an open interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R}, a real function ff is indefinitely differentiable and if there is an integer pp independent of nn such that, for all nn, the function f(n)f^{(n)} does not vanish at more than pp distinct points of II, then the Taylor series of ff on a neighbourhood of each point x0∈Ix_0 \in I is convergent, and has sum f(x)f(x) at every point of a neighbourhood of x0x_0.
