Exercise 8, § 3

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 41

Let ff be a real function defined and nn times differentiable on an interval II, let x1,x2,…,xpx_1, x_2, \ldots, x_p be distinct points of II, and nin_i (1≤i≤p1 \leq i \leq p) be pp integers >0> 0 such that

n1+n2+⋯+np=n. n_1 + n_2 + \cdots + n_p = n.

Suppose that at the point xix_i the function ff vanishes together with its first ni−1n_i - 1 derivatives for 1≤i≤p1 \leq i \leq p: show that there is a point ξ\xi interior to the smallest interval that contains the xix_i and such that f(n−1)(ξ)=0f^{(n-1)}(\xi) = 0.
