Exercise 23, § 4

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 48

Let ff be a continuous real function on a compact interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R}; among the functions g≤fg \leq f which are convex on II there exists one, g0g_0, larger than all the others. Let F⊂IF \subset I be the set of x∈Ix \in I where g0(x)=f(x)g_0(x) = f(x); show that FF is not empty and that on each of the open intervals contiguous to FF the function g0g_0 is equal to an affine linear function (argue by contradiction).
