Exercise 17, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, II, 82

Let gg be a real function admitting a continuous derivative, and ≠0\neq 0 on [a,x][a, x]; if ff is a real function having a regulated (n+1)th(n+1)^{th} derivative on [a,x][a, x], show that the remainder rn(x)r_n(x) in the Taylor expansion of order nn for ff at the point aa can be written

rn(x)=(g(x)−g(a))(x−ξ)nn!f(n+1)(ξ)g′(ξ) r_n(x) = (g(x) - g(a)) \frac{(x-\xi)^n}{n!} \frac{f^{(n+1)}(\xi)}{g'(\xi)}
where a<ξ<xa < \xi < x (use the integral form for rn(x)r_n(x)).
