Functions of a Real Variable, III, 115

Let ff be a continuous and differentiable map of R\mathbf{R} into a complete normed algebra EE over R\mathbf{R} having a unit element ee; suppose that f(0)=ef(0) = e and that, identically, f′(x)=f(x)cf'(x) = f(x)c where cc is an invertible element of EE. Show that ff is a homomorphism of the additive group R\mathbf{R} into the multiplicative group of invertible elements of EE. (Consider the largest open interval II containing 0 such that f(z)f(z) is invertible for all z∈Iz \in I, and prove that for x,yx, y and x+yx + y in II one has f(x+y)(f(x)f(y))−1=ef(x + y)(f(x)f(y))^{-1} = e keeping xx fixed and letting yy vary; then deduce that I=RI = \mathbf{R}.)
