Exercise 12, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, III, 118

a) Let ∑i,jcijxixˉj\sum_{i,j} c_{ij} x_i \bar{x}_j where cji=cˉijc_{ji} = \bar{c}_{ij} be a nondegenerate positive hermitian form, and Δ\Delta its determinant; show that Δ≤c11c22…cnn\Delta \leq c_{11} c_{22} \ldots c_{nn} (express Δ\Delta and the ciic_{ii} in terms of the eigenvalues of the hermitian form, and use prop. 2).

b) Deduce that if (aij)(a_{ij}) is a square matrix of order nn with arbitrary complex elements and Δ\Delta is its determinant, one has ("Hadamard's inequality")

∣Δ∣2≤(∑j=1n∣a1j∣2)(∑j=1n∣a2j∣2)⋯(∑j=1n∣anj∣2) |\Delta|^2 \leq \left( \sum_{j=1}^n |a_{1j}|^2 \right) \left( \sum_{j=1}^n |a_{2j}|^2 \right) \cdots \left( \sum_{j=1}^n |a_{nj}|^2 \right)
with equality only if one of the terms on the right-hand side is zero or if, for all distinct indices h,kh, k
ah1aˉk1+ah2aˉk2+⋯+ahnaˉkn=0 a_{h1}\bar{a}_{k1} + a_{h2}\bar{a}_{k2} + \cdots + a_{hn}\bar{a}_{kn} = 0
(multiply the matrix (aij)(a_{ij}) by the conjugate of its transpose).
