Exercise 21, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, III, 120

Let ff and gg be two relatively prime polynomials (with complex coefficients), the degree of ff being strictly less than that of gg. Let pp be the gcd of gg and its derivative g′g', and let qq be the quotient of gg by pp; show that there are two uniquely determined polynomials u, vu,\ v whose degrees are, respectively, strictly less than those of pp and qq, such that

fg=D(up)+vq. \frac{f}{g} = D \left( \frac{u}{p} \right) + \frac{v}{q}.
Deduce that the coefficients of uu and vv belong to the smallest field (over Q\mathbf{Q}) containing the coefficients of ff and gg and contained in C\mathbf{C}.
