Functions of a Real Variable, III, 121

It is set in small type as supplementary.

a) Let F⊂M(Δ)F \subset M(\Delta) be a differential field and let KK be a finite Galois extension of FF, a subfield of a M(Δ1)M(\Delta_1). Let tt be a primitive or an exponential of a primitive of a function of FF; show that if tt is transcendental over FF there is no function u∈Ku \in K such that t′=u′t' = u'. (Consider separately the two cases where t′=a∈Ft' = a \in F or t′=btt' = bt with b∈Fb \in F; obtain a contradiction by considering the transforms σ.u\sigma.u of uu by the Galois group of KK over FF and their derivatives σ.u′\sigma.u'; in the first case show that one would have t′=c′t' = c' for some c∈Fc \in F, and in the second case, putting N=[K:F]N = [K : F], one would have (tN/c)′=0(t^N/c)' = 0 for some c∈F∗c \in F_*)

b) Suppose that tt is transcendental over FF and that t′=btt' = bt with b∈Fb \in F; show that there does not exist any c≠0c \neq 0 in KK such that (ctm)′=0(ct^m)' = 0 (same method).*
