Functions of a Real Variable, III, 115

a) Show that (1+x)α≥1+αx(1 + x)^\alpha \geq 1 + \alpha x for α≥1\alpha \geq 1 and x≥0x \geq 0, and that (1+x)α≤1+αx(1 + x)^\alpha \leq 1 + \alpha x for 0≤α≤10 \leq \alpha \leq 1 and x≥0x \geq 0.

b) Show that (1−x)α≤11+αx(1 - x)^\alpha \leq \frac{1}{1 + \alpha x} for 0≤x≤10 \leq x \leq 1 and α≥0\alpha \geq 0.

c) For 0≤α≤10 \leq \alpha \leq 1 show that for x≥0x \geq 0 and y≥0y \geq 0 one has xαy1−α≤αx+byx^\alpha y^{1-\alpha} \leq \alpha x + b y for every pair of numbers >0> 0 for which aαb1−α=α(1−α)1−αa^\alpha b^{1-\alpha} = \alpha(1 - \alpha)^{1-\alpha}.

d) Deduce from c) that if f,gf, g are two regulated ≥0\geq 0 functions on an interval II such that the integrals ∫If(t) dt\int_I f(t)\,dt and ∫Ig(t) dt\int_I g(t)\,dt converge, then the integral ∫I(f(t))α(g(t))1−α dt\int_I (f(t))^\alpha (g(t))^{1-\alpha}\,dt converges, and

∫I(f(t))α(g(t))1−α dt≤a∫If(t) dt+b∫Ig(t) dt. \int_I \left( f(t) \right)^\alpha \left( g(t) \right)^{1-\alpha}\,dt \leq a \int_I f(t)\,dt + b \int_I g(t)\,dt.
From this deduce the Hölder inequality
∫I(f(t))α(g(t))1−α dt≤(∫If(t) dt)α(∫Ig(t) dt)1−α \int_I \left( f(t) \right)^\alpha \left( g(t) \right)^{1-\alpha}\,dt \leq \left( \int_I f(t)\,dt \right)^\alpha \left( \int_I g(t)\,dt \right)^{1-\alpha}
(which is called the "Cauchy-Buniakowski-Schwarz inequality" when α=12\alpha = \frac{1}{2}).
