Exercise 6, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, III, 116

Denote by AnA_n and GnG_n the usual arithmetic and geometric means of the first nn numbers of a sequence (ak)(a_k) (k≥1k \geq 1) of positive numbers. Show that

n(An−Gn)≤(n+1)(An+1−Gn+1) n \left( A_n - G_n \right) \leq (n+1) \left( A_{n+1} - G_{n+1} \right)
with equality only if an+1=Gna_{n+1} = G_n (put an+1=xn+1, Gn=yn+1a_{n+1} = x^{n+1},\ G_n = y^{n+1}).
