Exercise 7, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, III, 116

With the notation of exerc. 6 show that if one puts xi=ai/Anx_i = a_i / A_n the relation Gn≥(1−α)AnG_n \geq (1-\alpha)A_n for 0≤α<10 \leq \alpha < 1 implies, for 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n,

xi(1−xi−1n−1)n−1≥(1−α)n. x_i \left( 1 - \frac{x_i-1}{n-1} \right)^{n-1} \geq (1-\alpha)^n.
Deduce that for each index ii one has 1+x′≤xi≤1+x′′1 + x' \leq x_i \leq 1 + x'', where x′x' is the root ≤0\leq 0, and x′′x'' the root ≥0\geq 0, of the equation (1+x)e−x=(1−α)n(1+x)e^{-x} = (1-\alpha)^n (cf. III, p. 115, exerc. 2).
