Integration, IV, p. 123

a) Let Γ\Gamma be any set of subsets of a set AA. Let Ψ\Psi the set of subsets of AA of the form

X1∩X2∩⋯∩Xm∩CXm+1∩⋯∩CXm+p, X_1 \cap X_2 \cap \cdots \cap X_m \cap \mathbf{C} X_{m+1} \cap \cdots \cap \mathbf{C} X_{m+p},
where the XiX_i are sets in Γ\Gamma, mm is any integer ≥1\geq 1, and pp is any integer ≥0\geq 0. Show that the smallest clan Φ\Phi containing Γ\Gamma is the set of finite unions of sets in Ψ\Psi.

b) Let Δ\Delta be the set of finite intersections of sets in Γ\Gamma. Show that, for every vector space FF, the set of linear combinations (with coefficients in FF) of characteristic functions of sets of the clan generated by Γ\Gamma is identical to the set of linear combinations of characteristic functions of sets in Δ\Delta.

c) Let XX be a topological space, Γ\Gamma the set of compact subsets of XX. Show that the clan generated by Γ\Gamma is identical to the set of finite unions of subsets of XX of the form A∩CBA \cap \mathbf{C} B, where AA and BB are compact sets.
