Exercise 23, § 4

Integration, IV, p. 126

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

On the space Rn\mathbf{R}^n, let μ\mu be Lebesgue measure, ∣x∣|x| a norm such that the unit ball for this norm has measure equal to 1, and (xk)k⩾1(x_k)_{k \geqslant 1} an infinite sequence of distinct points of a bounded integrable set B such that μ(B)=1\mu(B) = 1. For every integer m, denote by dmd_m the infimum of the numbers ∣xi−xj∣|x_i - x_j| for 1⩽i<j⩽m1 \leqslant i < j \leqslant m. Show that

lim inf⁡m→∞mdmn≤αn−1, \liminf_{m \to \infty} md_m^n \leq \alpha_n^{-1},
where
αn=1+n∫01(1−t)n1+t dt. \alpha_n = 1 + n \int_0^1 \frac{(1-t)^n}{1+t} \, dt.

(Argue by contradiction, assuming that for some ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there exists an m0m_0 such that mdmn>hnmd_m^n > h_n for m≥m0m \geq m_0, with hn=αn−1+εh_n = \alpha_n^{-1} + \varepsilon. For 1≤i<m1 \leq i < m, let BiB_i be the ball with center xix_i and radius 12hnm−1/n\frac{1}{2} h_n m^{-1/n}, and for m≤i≤2nmm \leq i \leq 2^n m let BiB_i be the ball with center xix_i and radius 12hn(2i−1/n−m−1/n)\frac{1}{2} h_n (2i^{-1/n} - m^{-1/n}). Show that the 2nm2^n m balls BiB_i are pairwise disjoint, and evaluate the measure of their union, making use of the Euler–Maclaurin formula.)
