Exercise 4, § 4

Integration, IV, p. 121

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let μ\mu be Lebesgue measure on the interval X=[0,1]X = [0, 1].

a) Define in XX a nowhere dense perfect set AA whose measure is an arbitrary number α\alpha such that 0≤α<10 \leq \alpha < 1 (use the method of construction of Cantor’s triadic set).

b) Define in XX a sequence (An)(A_n) of pairwise disjoint nowhere dense integrable sets, such that μ(An)=2−n\mu(A_n) = 2^{-n} and such that every interval contiguous to Bn=⋃k=1nAkB_n = \bigcup_{k=1}^n A_k contains a subset of An+1A_{n+1} of measure >0> 0. If A=⋃nAnA = \bigcup_n A_n, show that AA is a meager set of measure 1, and ∁A\complement A a negligible non-meager set.

c) Let H=⋃n=0∞A2n+1H = \bigcup_{n=0}^\infty A_{2n+1}; show that, for every open interval I⊂XI \subset X, the intersections of II with HH and with ∁H\complement H have measure >0> 0. Let ff be a function equal almost everywhere to the characteristic function φH\varphi_H; show that there does not exist any sequence (fn)(f_n) of continuous functions on XX, convergent at every point of XX, whose limit is equal to ff (note that ff is necessarily discontinuous at every point of XX, and make use of Exer. 22 of GT, IX, §5).
