Exercise 9, § 4

Integration, IV, p. 122

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let μ\mu be a positive measure on a locally compact space XX. In the Banach space F~1\widetilde{\mathscr{F}}^1 of equivalence classes of functions in F1\mathscr{F}^1, let GG be a closed linear subspace containing the subspace L1L^1; let G\mathscr{G} be the closed linear subspace of F1\mathscr{F}^1 formed by the functions whose class belongs to GG. Show that one can extend to G\mathscr{G} the linear form μ(f)\mu(f) in such a way that the inequality ∣μ(f)∣≤N1(f)|\mu(f)| \leq N_1(f) is again verified (make use of the Hahn–Banach theorem). Show that for the integral so extended, Th. 3 of §3 is again valid.

b) Assume that GG is the direct sum of L1L^1 and a subspace HH of finite dimension. Show that, in G\mathscr{G}, Lebesgue’s theorem (Th. 2) is again valid. (Let (fn)(f_n) be a sequence of functions in G\mathscr{G}, tending almost everywhere to ff and such that ∣fn∣≤g|f_n| \leq g, where g≥0g \geq 0 and N1(g)<+∞N_1(g) < +\infty. Let (u~k)1≤k≤m(\tilde{u}_k)_{1 \leq k \leq m} be a basis of HH, and let fn=∑k=1mαnkuk+hnf_n = \sum_{k=1}^m \alpha_{nk} u_k + h_n, where hn∈L1h_n \in \mathscr{L}^1. Using the fact that GG is the topological direct sum of L1L^1 and HH, show that the αnk\alpha_{nk} are uniformly bounded; on passing, if necessary, to a subsequence of (fn)(f_n), reduce to the case that each of the sequences (αnk)n≥1(\alpha_{nk})_{n \geq 1} has a limit; from this, deduce that hn(x)h_n(x) then tends to a limit almost everywhere, and apply Lebesgue’s theorem to the sequence (hn)(h_n); note finally that two subsequences of (f~n)(\tilde{f}_n) cannot tend to different limits in GG.)
