Exercise 12, § 6

Integration, V, p. 110

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let gg be a finite numerical function defined on a compact interval I=[a,b]I = [a, b] of R\mathbf{R}. One calls right-expansion set (resp. left-expansion set) of gg in II the set of x∈Ix \in I such that there exists y∈Iy \in I for which x<yx < y (resp. x>yx > y) and g(x)<g(y)g(x) < g(y). Show that if gg is continuous, then the right- (resp. left-) expansion set of gg in II is open in II and that, if ]α,β[]\alpha, \beta[ is a connected component1^1 of this set, then g(α)=g(β)g(\alpha) = g(\beta) and g(x)≤g(α)g(x) \leq g(\alpha) for α<x<β\alpha < x < \beta.

b) Let r1,r2r_1, r_2 be two real numbers such that 0≤r1<r20 \leq r_1 < r_2. Let gg be an increasing continuous function on II; let E′E' be the left-expansion set of g(x)−r1xg(x) - r_1 x in II, E′′E'' the union of the right-expansion sets of g(x)−r2xg(x) - r_2 x in each of the intervals that are the closures of the connected components of E′E'. If μ\mu is Lebesgue measure on II, show, using a), that μ(E′′)≤r1r2μ(E′)\mu(E'') \leq \frac{r_1}{r_2} \mu(E').

c) One calls the upper and lower right derivates at a point x∈Ix \in I, of a finite numerical function ff defined on II, the respective numbers

Dr+f(x)=lim sup⁡h→0,h>0(f(x+h)−f(x))/hh D_r^+ f(x) = \limsup_{h \to 0, h > 0} \frac{(f(x + h) - f(x))/h}{h}
Dr−f(x)=lim inf⁡h→0,h>0(f(x+h)−f(x))/hh. D_r^- f(x) = \liminf_{h \to 0, h > 0} \frac{(f(x + h) - f(x))/h}{h}.

Similarly, one calls the upper and lower left derivates of ff at the point xx, the respective numbers

Dl+f(x)=lim sup⁡h→0,h<0(f(x+h)−f(x))/hh D_l^+ f(x) = \limsup_{h \to 0, h < 0} \frac{(f(x + h) - f(x))/h}{h}
Dl−f(x)=lim inf⁡h→0,h<0(f(x+h)−f(x))/hh. D_l^- f(x) = \liminf_{h \to 0, h < 0} \frac{(f(x + h) - f(x))/h}{h}.

Show that if ff is continuous and increasing, then the set of x∈Ix \in I where Dr+f(x)=+∞D_r^+ f(x) = +\infty and the set of x∈Ix \in I where Dl−f(x)<Dr+f(x)D_l^- f(x) < D_r^+ f(x) have measure zero for μ\mu (for every rational number r>0r > 0 (resp. for every pair (r1,r2)(r_1, r_2) of rational numbers such that 0≤r1<r20 \leq r_1 < r_2), consider the set of x∈Ix \in I such that Dr+f(x)>rD_r^+ f(x) > r (resp. Dl−f(x)<r1D_l^- f(x) < r_1 and Dr+f(x)>r2D_r^+ f(x) > r_2 simultaneously), and apply b)). From this, deduce that for almost every x∈Ix \in I, ff admits a finite derivative (Lebesgue’s theorem) (apply the preceding result also to −f(−x)-f(-x)).
