a) Let ρ\rho and σ\sigma be two positive measures on R\mathbf{R}. Show that if ρ([a,b])=σ([a,b])\rho([a, b]) = \sigma([a, b]) for every semi-open interval ]a,b]]a, b], then ρ=σ\rho = \sigma.

b) Let I be an interval of R\mathbf{R}, with left end-point α\alpha and right end-point β\beta, and let ψ\psi be an increasing finite numerical function defined on I; extend ψ\psi to R\mathbf{R} in any way whatsoever. In order that ψ\psi be proper for the measure φI⋅μ\varphi_I \cdot \mu (μ\mu Lebesgue measure on R\mathbf{R}), it is necessary and sufficient that the following two conditions hold: 1° either α\alpha is finite, or α=−∞\alpha = -\infty and lim⁡x→−∞ψ(x)=−∞\lim_{x \to -\infty} \psi(x) = -\infty; 2° either β\beta is finite, or β=+∞\beta = +\infty and lim⁡x→+∞ψ(x)=+∞\lim_{x \to +\infty} \psi(x) = +\infty.

Suppose these conditions verified. For every y∈Ry \in \mathbf{R}, let θ(y)\theta(y) be the supremum of the set of x∈Ix \in I such that ψ(x)≤y\psi(x) \leq y (the supremum being equal to α\alpha if this set is empty). Show that θ\theta is a finite numerical function, increasing and right-continuous in R\mathbf{R}. If ν\nu is the image of φI⋅μ\varphi_I \cdot \mu under ψ\psi, then ν([a,b])=θ(b)−θ(a)\nu([a, b]) = \theta(b) - \theta(a) for every semi-open interval ]a,b]]a, b] in R\mathbf{R}.

c) Conversely, show that for every finite numerical function θ\theta, increasing and right-continuous in R\mathbf{R}, there exists one and only one positive measure ν\nu on R\mathbf{R} such that ν([a,b])=θ(b)−θ(a)\nu([a, b]) = \theta(b) - \theta(a) for every semi-open interval ]a,b]]a, b] of R\mathbf{R} (the 'Stieltjes measure on R\mathbf{R} defined by θ\theta'; one writes ∫f dθ\int f \, d\theta instead of ∫f dν\int f \, d\nu); moreover, every positive measure on R\mathbf{R} may be obtained in this way. Under what condition is the measure ν\nu diffuse? What is then the image of ν\nu under θ\theta?
