Exercise 11, § 3

Integration, VI, p. 71

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let KK be a metrizable compact space, μ\mu a positive measure on KK, ff a μ\mu-measurable mapping of KK into a locally compact space TT, and ν\nu a positive measure on TT; I and UU have the same meaning as in Exer. 10.

a) Suppose that for every μ\mu-negligible set N⊂KN \subset K, f(N)f(N) is ν\nu-negligible. Then UU is ν\nu-negligible and, for every μ\mu-measurable subset A⊂KA \subset K, f(A)f(A) is ν\nu-measurable.

b) In order that II be ν\nu-negligible and the image under ff of every μ\mu-negligible set be ν\nu-negligible, it is necessary and sufficient that ff satisfy the following condition: for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exists a δ>0\delta > 0 such that, for every subset A⊂KA \subset K that is μ\mu-measurable and is such that μ(A)≤δ\mu(A) \leq \delta, f(A)f(A) is ν\nu-measurable and ν(f(A))≤ε\nu(f(A)) \leq \varepsilon. (To see that the condition is necessary, argue by contradiction, by considering a decreasing sequence (An)(A_n) of μ\mu-measurable sets whose intersection is μ\mu-negligible, but such that ν(f(An))≥α>0\nu(f(A_n)) \geq \alpha > 0; then take the intersection of the f(An)f(A_n) and CI\mathbf{C}I.)
