Exercise 12, § 3

Integration, VI, p. 71

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let EE be the non-metrizable compact space obtained by equipping the interval [−1,+1][ -1, +1 ] of R\mathbf{R} with the topology T\mathscr{T} defined in Exer. 13 a) of GT, IX, §2; let φ\varphi be the mapping x↦∣x∣x \mapsto |x| of EE onto I=[0,1]I = [0, 1] (equipped with the topology induced by that of R\mathbf{R}).

a) Show that φ\varphi is continuous and that, denoting by F\mathscr{F} the set of subsets of EE of the form φ−1(A)\varphi^{-1}(A), where AA is a Borel subset of II, the Borel subsets of EE are the subsets BB such that there exists an M∈FM \in \mathscr{F} for which B∩CMB \cap \mathbf{C}M and M∩CBM \cap \mathbf{C}B are countable (observe that every open set of EE belongs to F\mathscr{F}).

b) Show that for a numerical function ff defined on EE to be continuous (for T\mathscr{T}), it is necessary and sufficient that it be regulated and that f(x−)=f((−x)+)f(x-) = f((-x)+) for every x∈Ex \in E. One therefore defines a positive measure μ\mu on EE by setting ∫f dμ=∫01f(x) dx\int f\, d\mu = \int_0^1 f(x)\, dx. Show that the image of μ\mu under φ\varphi is the Lebesgue measure on II, and the μ\mu-negligible sets are the subsets negligible for Lebesgue measure on [−1,+1][ -1, +1 ].

c) Deduce from a) and b) that there does not exist a μ\mu-measurable section for the μ\mu-measurable equivalence relation φ(x)=φ(y)\varphi(x) = \varphi(y) in EE.
