Exercise 11, § 1

Integration, VII, p. 79

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a nondiscrete locally compact group countable at infinity, β\beta a left Haar measure on GG. Show that every compact neighborhood VV of ee contains a normal subgroup HH of GG, β\beta-negligible and such that G/HG/H is a Polish locally compact group. (One can proceed as follows: let LL be the open subgroup of GG generated by VV; let b1,b2,…b_1, b_2, \ldots be representatives of the left cosets with respect to LL. Form a decreasing sequence (Vn)(V_n) of symmetric neighborhoods of ee such that: 1) Vn2⊂Vn−1V_n^2 \subset V_{n-1}; 2) xVnx−1⊂Vn−1xV_nx^{-1} \subset V_{n-1} for every x∈Vx \in V; 3) biVnbi−1⊂Vn−1b_i V_n b_i^{-1} \subset V_{n-1} for 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n; 4) β(Vn)≤1/n\beta(V_n) \leq 1/n. Set H=V1∩V2∩⋯H = V_1 \cap V_2 \cap \cdots.

Let (fn)(f_n) be a sequence of numerical functions uniformly continuous for the left uniform structure of GG. Show that HH can be constructed in such a way that, in addition, the fnf_n are constant on the cosets of HH. (In the preceding construction, take VnV_n to be such that ∣fi(x)−fi(y)∣≤1/n|f_i(x) - f_i(y)| \leq 1/n for x−1y∈Vnx^{-1}y \in V_n and 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n.)

Let (gn)(g_n) be a sequence of β\beta-integrable numerical functions on GG. Show that HH can be constructed in such a way that, in addition, each gng_n is equal almost everywhere to a function that is constant on the cosets of HH.
