Exercise 12, § 1

Integration, VII, p. 79

Let KK be a nondiscrete locally compact field, EE a left topological vector space over KK. a) If EE is 1-dimensional, then EE is isomorphic to KsK_s (imitate the proof of Prop. 2 of TVS, I, §2, No. 2, replacing the absolute value by the function modK\mathrm{mod}_K). b) If EE is nn-dimensional, then EE is isomorphic to KsnK_s^n (imitate the proof of Th. 2 of TVS, I, §2, No. 3). c) Assume that EE is locally compact. Let FF be a linear subspace of EE of finite dimension nn. For every a∈Ka \in K, let modeE(a)\mathrm{mode}_E(a) be the modulus of x↦axx \mapsto ax in EE. Since FF is closed in EE by b), one can form modE/F(a)\mathrm{mod}_{E/F}(a). Show that modE(a)=modK(a)nmodE/F(a)\mathrm{mod}_E(a) = \mathrm{mod}_K(a)^n \mathrm{mod}_{E/F}(a). Show that if modK(a)<1\mathrm{mod}_K(a) < 1 and F≠EF \neq E, then modE/F(an)<1\mathrm{mod}_{E/F}(a^n) < 1. (One has an→0a^n \to 0 as n→+∞n \to +\infty; from this, deduce that modE/F(an)→0\mathrm{mod}_{E/F}(a^n) \to 0 by arguing as in Prop. 12 of No. 10.) Deduce from this that n≤log⁡mode(1/a)/log⁡modK(1/a)n \leq \log \mathrm{mode}(1/a)/\log \mathrm{mod}_K(1/a), hence that EE is finite-dimensional. (We shall see in CA, VI, that the topology of a locally compact field can be defined by an absolute value. The final result of c) will then be a special case of Th. 3 of TVS, I, §2, No. 4.)
