Exercise 15, § 1

Integration, VII, p. 81

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a locally compact group, HH a closed subgroup of GG, so that GG operates continuously on G/HG/H. Assume that HH satisfies the following condition: for every neighborhood VV of ee in GG, there exists a neighborhood UU of ee such that HU⊂VHHU \subset VH (note that this condition is satisfied for every subgroup HH of GG if ee admits a fundamental system of neighborhoods invariant under every inner automorphism of GG). Show that there then exists a nonzero positive measure on G/HG/H invariant under GG. (Use the same method as in the proof of Th. 1 of No. 2, on observing, on the one hand, that as UU runs over the set of neighborhoods of ee in GG, the images of the sets HUHHUH under the canonical mapping π:G→G/H\pi : G \to G/H form a fundamental system of neighborhoods of π(H)\pi(H); on the other hand, for every neighborhood VV of ee in GG and every compact subset KK of GG, there exist a neighborhood UU of ee in GG and a compact subset LL of GG such that every set of the form sHUHsHUH that intersects KHKH is of the form s′HUHs'HUH with s′∈Ls' \in L.)
