Exercise 16, § 1

Integration, VII, p. 81

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a compact abelian group, EE a dense subset of GG that is stable under the law of composition of GG. Assume that, for every bounded numerical function ff on EE, there is defined a number M(f)M(f) having the following property: for any two bounded functions f,gf, g on EE, for any elements ai,bka_i, b_k of EE (1≤i≤m,1≤k≤n1 \leq i \leq m, 1 \leq k \leq n), and for any real numbers αi,βk\alpha_i, \beta_k (1≤i≤m,1≤k≤n1 \leq i \leq m, 1 \leq k \leq n) such that

∑iαif(xai)≤∑kβkg(xbk) \sum_i \alpha_i f(xa_i) \leq \sum_k \beta_k g(xb_k)

for all x∈Ex \in E, one then has the inequality

(∑iαi)M(f)≤(∑kβk)M(g). \left( \sum_i \alpha_i \right) M(f) \leq \left( \sum_k \beta_k \right) M(g).

Assume in addition that M(1)=1M(1) = 1 (cf. TVS, IV, Appendix).

a) Let μ\mu be the normalized Haar measure on GG. Show that for every continuous numerical function ff on GG, ∫fdμ=M(f∣E)\int f d\mu = M(f|E). (By considering a suitable partition of unity, approximate the constant function equal to ∫fdμ\int f d\mu on EE by means of functions of the form x↦∑iαif(xai)x \mapsto \sum_i \alpha_i f(xa_i), where ai∈Ea_i \in E.)

b) Deduce from a) that if one sets ν(B)=M(φB)\nu(B) = M(\varphi_B) for every subset BB of EE, then ν(U∩E)≥μ(U)\nu(U \cap E) \geq \mu(U) for every open subset UU of GG, and ν(F∩E)≤μ(F)\nu(F \cap E) \leq \mu(F) for every closed subset FF of GG. For every μ\mu-quadrable subset PP of GG (Ch. IV, §5, Exer. 17 d)), one has ν(P∩E)=μ(P)\nu(P \cap E) = \mu(P).
