Exercise 21, § 1

Integration, VII, p. 83

a) Let GG be a locally compact group, μ\mu a left Haar measure on GG. Show that if SS is a stable subset of GG such that μ∗(S)>0\mu_*(S) > 0, then the interior of SS is nonempty (cf. Exer. 20). In particular, if a subgroup HH of GG has nonzero inner measure, then HH is an open subgroup of GG.

b) If GG is compact, then every stable subset SS of GG such that μ∗(S)>0\mu_*(S) > 0 is a compact open subgroup of GG (observe that the interior of SS is stable, and make use of Exer. 17 b)).

c) Assume that GG is compact and abelian, written additively, and that there exists in GG an element aa of infinite order. Show that there exists a stable subset SS of GG such that a∈S,−a∉Sa \in S, -a \notin S and G=S∪(−S)G = S \cup (-S) (use Zorn's lemma); deduce from b) that SS is not measurable and that μ∗(S)=0\mu_*(S) = 0.
