Exercise 22, § 1

Integration, VII, p. 83

Let GG be a locally compact group, μ\mu a left Haar measure on GG, and AA an integrable subset of GG such that μ(A)>0\mu(A) > 0. Show that the set H(A)H(A) of s∈Gs \in G such that μ(A)=μ(A∩sA)\mu(A) = \mu(A \cap sA) is a compact group. (Observe that H(A)H(A) is closed in GG, with the help of Exer. 20. To see that H(A)H(A) is compact, consider a compact subset BB of AA such that μ(B)>μ(A)/2\mu(B) > \mu(A)/2 and prove that H(A)⊂BB−1H(A) \subset BB^{-1}.)
