Exercise 30, § 1

Integration, VII, p. 87

Let GG be a locally compact group, μ\mu a left Haar measure on GG, and ν\nu a bounded measure on GG. Assume that the mapping s↦γ(s)νs \mapsto \gamma(s)\nu of GG into the Banach space M1(G)\mathscr{M}^1(G) is continuous. Show that the measure ν\nu has base μ\mu. (Let AA be a μ\mu-negligible compact subset of GG. Arguing as for Prop. 11, show that ν(xA)=0\nu(xA) = 0 for xx running over a dense subset of GG. From this, deduce that ν(A)=0\nu(A) = 0.)

Conversely, if ν\nu has base μ\mu, then the mapping s↦γ(s)νs \mapsto \gamma(s)\nu of GG into M1(G)\mathscr{M}^1(G) is continuous: cf. Ch. VIII, §2, No. 5, Prop. 8.
