Exercise 10, § 2

Integration, VII, p. 89

With the notations of §1, No. 6, Prop. 6 let, for every α∈A\alpha \in A, μα\mu_\alpha be a left Haar measure on GαG_\alpha, so that the inverse limit of the μα\mu_\alpha is a left Haar measure μ\mu on G. For every α∈A\alpha \in A, denote by λα\lambda_\alpha the normalized Haar measure on KαK_\alpha.

a) Let pp be a finite number ⩾1\geqslant 1 and let ff be a function in LFp(G,μ)\mathscr{L}_F^p(G, \mu) (F a Banach space or F=R‾F = \overline{\mathbf{R}}). For every α∈A\alpha \in A, the function

fα(s)=∫Kαf(sξ)dλα(ξ), f_\alpha(s) = \int_{K_\alpha} f(s\xi) d\lambda_\alpha(\xi),
defined almost everywhere for μ\mu, belongs to LFp(G,μ)\mathscr{L}_F^p(G, \mu) (Exer. 9). Show that, with respect to the directed set A, fαf_\alpha tends in mean of order pp to ff (make use of Lemma 2 of §1, No. 6).

b) Assume that A=NA = \mathbf{N} and p=1p = 1. Show that fnf_n then tends to ff almost everywhere (for μ\mu) in G (use a method analogous to that of Ch. V, §8, Exer. 16).
