Exercise 12, § 2
Integration, VII, p. 90
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
a) Let be a topological space, an upper semi-continuous function. Let be the set of points of where is locally constant, and . Define recursively two sequences , of subsets of , in the following way: is the set of points of where is locally constant, and . Show that is a dense open subset of , and that .
(Show that at every point of .)
b) Let be a set, a group operating on the right in , the canonical mapping of onto , and (resp. ) the set of such that is injective (resp. surjective). Let be a countable covering of by elements of . Let
Show that .
c) Let be a locally compact space, a countable discrete group operating on the right in continuously and properly, the canonical mapping of onto , and a measure on . Show that if the sets of b) are quadrable (Ch. IV, §5, Exer. 17 d)), then the set of b) is a quadrable fundamental domain.
d) Let us maintain the hypotheses of c), and use the notations of No. 10. An is said to be general if there exists a neighborhood of in such that for all . Show that the general points of are those where the function is locally constant. Show that a general point admits an open neighborhood that belongs to and is quadrable (make use of Ch. IV, §5, Exer. 17 d)).
e) Let us maintain the hypotheses of c), and assume moreover that is countable at infinity. Show that if is -negligible, then there exists a fundamental domain that is Borel and quadrable. (Apply the construction of a) to the function . Then apply the results of c) and d) in . Argue similarly in each .)
f) Let be an open set. Show that one can impose on the set of e) the following supplementary properties: 1) ; 2) for every compact subset of , the set of such that intersects is finite.
