Exercise 13, § 2

Integration, VII, p. 90

Let GG be a compact group, μ\mu a Haar measure on GG, uu an endomorphism of GG such that u(G)u(G) is an open subgroup of GG and the kernel u‾(e)\overline{u}(e) (denoted GuG_u) a finite subgroup of GG.

a) Show that there exist a real number h(u)>0h(u) > 0 and an open neighborhood U of e in G such that, for every open set V⊂UV \subset U, u(V)u(V) is open in G and μ(u(V))=h(u)μ(V)\mu(u(V)) = h(u)\mu(V) (cf. §1, No. 7, Cor. of Prop. 9).

b) Show that h(u)=Card(G/u(G))/Card(Gu)h(u) = \mathrm{Card}(G/u(G))/\mathrm{Card}(G_u) (calculate μ(u(G))\mu(u(G)) in two ways, using a) and Prop. 10 of No. 7).
