Exercise 7, § 2

Integration, VII, p. 88

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let EE be a locally compact space, Γ\Gamma a locally compact group operating on the left continuously in EE. Assume that for every x∈Ex \in E, the mapping s↦s⋅xs \mapsto s \cdot x of Γ\Gamma into EE is proper, and that there exists a nonzero bounded positive measure μ\mu on EE invariant under Γ\Gamma. Then Γ\Gamma is compact. (Let (sn)(s_n) be a sequence of points of Γ\Gamma. Let KK be a compact subset of EE that is not μ\mu-negligible. Show, using Exer. 15 of Ch. IV, §4, that there exists an x0∈Ex_0 \in E such that snx0∈Ks_n x_0 \in K for infinitely many values of nn. From this, deduce that (sn)(s_n) has a cluster point in Γ\Gamma. Then apply Exer. 6 of GT, II, §4.)

b) Let GG be a locally compact group, HH and KK two closed subgroups of GG. Assume that GG and HH are unimodular and that G/HG/H has finite measure for the measure invariant under GG. Show that for HH and KK to satisfy the equivalent conditions of Exer. 11 c) of GT, III, §4, it is necessary and sufficient that KK be compact.
