Exercise 8, § 2

Integration, VII, p. 88

Let G\mathfrak{G} be a locally compact group, GG and HH two closed subgroups of G\mathfrak{G}. Assume that every s∈Gs \in \mathfrak{G} can be written in one and only one way in the form s=ξx=yηs = \xi x = y \eta (ξ,η∈G, x,y∈H)(\xi, \eta \in G,\ x, y \in H), and that ξ,x,y,η\xi, x, y, \eta depend continuously on ss. Every ξ∈G\xi \in G defines a homeomorphism ξ^\widehat{\xi} of H onto H by ξx∈ξ^(x)G (x∈H)\xi x \in \widehat{\xi}(x)G\ (x \in H). Every x∈Hx \in H defines a homeomorphism x^\widehat{x} of G onto G by ξx∈Hx^(ξ) (ξ∈G)\xi x \in H \widehat{x}(\xi)\ (\xi \in G). Let μ,α,β\mu, \alpha, \beta be left Haar measures on G,G,H\mathfrak{G}, G, H. Show that

dx^−1(α)(ξ)=ΔG(ξ^(x))ΔG(x^(ξ))ΔH(ξ^(x))ΔG(ξ)dα(ξ), d\widehat{x}^{-1}(\alpha)(\xi) = \frac{\Delta_{\mathfrak{G}}(\widehat{\xi}(x)) \Delta_G(\widehat{x}(\xi))}{\Delta_H(\widehat{\xi}(x)) \Delta_G(\xi)} d\alpha(\xi),
dξ^−1(β)(x)=ΔG(x^(ξ))ΔG(x^(ξ))dβ(x). d\widehat{\xi}^{-1}(\beta)(x) = \frac{\Delta_G(\widehat{x}(\xi))}{\Delta_{\mathfrak{G}}(\widehat{x}(\xi))} d\beta(x).

(Let f∈K(G)f \in \mathscr{K}(G). Express the fact that ∫f(u)dμ(u)\int f(u) d\mu(u), calculated with the help of (23), either for X=G, Y=HX = G,\ Y = H, or for X=H, Y=GX = H,\ Y = G, is invariant when ff is subjected to left translation by an element of G or an element of H.)
