Integration, VII, p. 94

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let KK be a commutative field, EE a vector space over KK, FF a linear subspace of EE, pp the canonical homomorphism of EE onto E/FE/F, and AA the set of homomorphisms f:E/F→Ef : E/F \to E such that p∘fp \circ f is the identity homomorphism of E/FE/F.

a) If f∈Af \in A and h∈Hom(E/F,F)h \in \mathrm{Hom}(E/F, F), then f+h∈Af + h \in A. Show that if f,f′∈Af, f' \in A, there exists one and only one h∈Hom(E/F,F)h \in \mathrm{Hom}(E/F, F) such that f+h=f′f + h = f'. One can therefore regard AA as an affine space of which Hom(E/F,F)\mathrm{Hom}(E/F, F) is the space of translations.

b) Let BB be the set of linear subspaces of EE that are supplementary to FF in EE. Show that f↦f(E/F)f \mapsto f(E/F) is a bijection of AA onto BB. One can therefore regard BB as an affine space of which Hom(E/F,F)\mathrm{Hom}(E/F, F) is the space of translations.

c) Show that if uu is an automorphism of EE such that u(F)=Fu(F) = F, then the mapping f↦u∘ff \mapsto u \circ f is an affine bijection of AA onto AA. (Choose an origin in AA, and observe that the mapping h↦u∘hh \mapsto u \circ h is an automorphism of the vector space Hom(E/F,F)\mathrm{Hom}(E/F, F).) From this, deduce that the mapping F′↦u(F′)F' \mapsto u(F') is an affine bijection of BB onto BB.

d) Assume that K=RK = \mathbf{R} and dim⁡E<+∞\dim E < +\infty. Let GG be a compact group, and ρ\rho a continuous linear representation of GG in EE such that ρ(s)(F)=F\rho(s)(F) = F for all s∈Gs \in G. Show that there exists an F′∈BF' \in B such that ρ(s)(F′)=F′\rho(s)(F') = F' for all s∈Gs \in G. (Make use of c) and Lemma 2 of No. 2.) Obtain this result anew using Prop. 1 of No. 1.
