Bourbaki

Exercise 3, § 3

Integration, VII, p. 91

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let X be a locally compact space in which a locally compact group H operates on the right, continuously and properly, by (x,ξ)↦xξ(x, \xi) \mapsto x\xi (x∈X,ξ∈Hx \in X, \xi \in H). Let π\pi be the canonical mapping X→X/HX \to X/H. Let ρ\rho be a continuous representation of H in GL(n,C)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{C}). Show that for every b∈X/Hb \in X/H, there exist a neighborhood U of b in X/H and a continuous mapping r of π‾(U)\overline{\pi}(U) into GL(n,C)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{C}) such that r(xξ)=r(x)ρ(ξ)r(x\xi) = r(x)\rho(\xi) for all x∈π‾(U)x \in \overline{\pi}(U) and ξ∈H\xi \in H. (One may assume X/H to be compact. Let f be a continuous function ⩾0\geqslant 0 on X, not identically zero on any orbit, and with compact support. Set

r(x)=∫Hf(xξ)ρ(ξ)−1 dβ(ξ)∈Mn(C), r(x) = \int_H f(x\xi)\rho(\xi)^{-1}\, d\beta(\xi) \in \mathbf{M}_n(\mathbf{C}),

where β\beta denotes a left Haar measure on H. Show that, for f and U suitably chosen, r(x)∈GL(n,C)r(x) \in \mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{C}) for every x∈π‾(U)x \in \overline{\pi}(U).
