Exercise 7, § 3

Integration, VII, p. 92

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be the unimodular group SL(n,R)\mathrm{SL}(n, \mathbf{R}), Γ\Gamma the subgroup of GG formed by the matrices of determinant 1 with integer entries. Show, by induction on nn, that every invariant measure μ\mu on the homogeneous space G/ΓG/\Gamma is bounded and that, for f∈K(Rn)f \in \mathscr{K}(\mathbf{R}^n), one has, with μ\mu suitably chosen,

∫Rnf(x)dx=∫G/Γ(∑z∈Zn,z≠0f(X⋅z))dμ(X˙) \int_{\mathbf{R}^n} f(x) dx = \int_{G/\Gamma} \left( \sum_{z \in \mathbf{Z}^n, z \neq 0} f(X \cdot z) \right) d\mu(\dot{X})

(X˙=XΓ)(\dot{X} = X \Gamma). (Let G′G' be the subgroup of GG leaving invariant the basis vector (1,0,0,…,0)(1, 0, 0, \ldots, 0), so that G/G′G/G' may be identified with Rn\mathbf{R}^n. Let G′′=G′∩ΓG'' = G' \cap \Gamma. Let HH be the subgroup of matrices (1w0Y) \begin{pmatrix} 1 & w \\ 0 & Y \end{pmatrix} of G′G' for which Y∈SL(n−1,R)Y \in \mathrm{SL}(n-1, \mathbf{R}) has integer entries. Then H/G′′H/G'' is compact and, by the induction hypothesis, G′/HG'/H has a finite invariant measure, therefore by Prop. 12, §2, No. 8, G′/G′′G'/G'' has a finite invariant measure. Applying Exer. 6 of §2, and Exer. 20 b) of A, VII, §4, show that, for f∈K(Rn)f \in \mathscr{K}(\mathbf{R}^n),

a∫Rnf(x)dx=∫G/Γ(∑f(X⋅m))dμ(X˙), a \int_{\mathbf{R}^n} f(x) dx = \int_{G/\Gamma} \left( \sum f(X \cdot m) \right) d\mu(\dot{X}),

where the summation is over the set of vectors m=(m1,…,mn)m = (m_1, \ldots, m_n) whose coordinates are setwise coprime integers (A, VII, §1, No. 2, Th. 1). Applying this to the functions f(2x)f(2x), f(3x)f(3x), ... and summing, prove (1). Then, replacing ff by the function x↦εnf(εx)x \mapsto \varepsilon^n f(\varepsilon x) with f≥0f \geq 0, and letting ε\varepsilon tend to 0, show that every compact subset of G/ΓG/\Gamma has measure ≤1\leq 1.
