Integration, VIII, p. 60

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a locally compact group, UU a continuous linear representation of GG in a locally convex space EE, and E′E' the dual of EE equipped with the strong topology. a) Show that for every compact subset KK of GG, tU(K)^tU(K) is equicontinuous. b) Let FF be the set of a′∈E′a' \in E' such that the mapping s↦tU(s)a′s \mapsto ^tU(s)a' of GG into E′E' is continuous. Show that FF is a closed linear subspace of E′E' stable for tU(G)^tU(G) and that the representation deduced by restricting to FF the contragredient representation of UU is continuous. c) Assume that EE is quasi-complete. Let α\alpha be a left Haar measure on GG. Show that f↦U(f⋅α)f \mapsto U(f \cdot \alpha) is a continuous mapping of K(G)\mathscr{K}(G) into L(E;E)\mathscr{L}(E; E) equipped with the topology of bounded convergence. (Use Prop. 17 of Ch. VI, §1, No. 7.) Show that FF is weakly dense in E′E'. (Prove that tU(f)a′∈F^tU(f)a' \in F for all a′∈E′a' \in E' and f∈K(G)f \in \mathscr{K}(G), then use Cor. 3 of Lemma 4.) Deduce from this that if EE is semi-reflexive, then the contragredient representation of UU in E′E' equipped with the strong topology is continuous. d) Show that if UU is taken to be the left regular representation of GG in L1(G,α)L^1(G, \alpha) (α\alpha still being a left Haar measure on GG), then FF is the subspace of E′=L∞(G,α)E' = L^\infty(G, \alpha) formed by the uniformly continuous functions.
