Let G be a locally compact abelian group, μ\mu a Haar measure on G, ff a μ\mu-measurable finite numerical function on G. Assume that for every s∈Gs \in G, the numerical function

x↦f(sx)−f(x) x \mapsto f(sx) - f(x)
is continuous on G. Show that ff is then continuous. (Argue by contradiction; assuming that the function ff is not continuous at a point x0∈Gx_0 \in G, show first that there exists on G a filter F\mathfrak{F} with limit ee such that
lim⁡F,s∣f(sx0)∣=+∞, \lim_{\mathfrak{F}, s} |f(sx_0)| = +\infty,
and deduce from this that also lim⁡F,s∣f(sx)∣=+∞\lim_{\mathfrak{F}, s} |f(sx)| = +\infty for every x∈Gx \in G. If g=∣f∣/(1+∣f∣)g = |f|/(1 + |f|), deduce from the last result a contradiction to the fact that for every compact subset K⊂GK \subset G,
lim⁡F,s∫K∣g(sx)−g(x)∣ dμ(x)=0.) \lim_{\mathfrak{F}, s} \int_K |g(sx) - g(x)|\, d\mu(x) = 0.)
