Exercise 1, § 5

Integration, VIII, p. 73

Let XX be a locally compact space, F\mathfrak{F} (or F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X)) the set of closed subsets of XX. For every compact subset KK of XX, every compact neighborhood LL of KK, and every entourage VV of the unique uniform structure of LL, let Q(K,L,V)Q(K, L, V) be the set of pairs (A,B)(A, B) of elements of F\mathfrak{F} satisfying the two conditions

A∩K⊂V(B∩L)andB∩K⊂V(A∩L). A \cap K \subset V(B \cap L) \quad \text{and} \quad B \cap K \subset V(A \cap L).

a) Show that the sets Q(K,L,V)Q(K, L, V) form a fundamental system of entourages for a Hausdorff uniform structure on F\mathfrak{F}.

b) Let U\mathscr{U} be a uniform structure compatible with the topology of XX. For every compact subset KK of XX and every entourage WW of U\mathscr{U}, let P(K,W)P(K, W) be the set of pairs (A,B)(A, B) of F\mathfrak{F} satisfying the two conditions

A∩K⊂W(B)andB∩K⊂W(A). A \cap K \subset W(B) \quad \text{and} \quad B \cap K \subset W(A).

Show that the sets P(K,W)P(K, W) form a fundamental system of entourages for the uniform structure defined in a).

c) Let X′X' be the Alexandroff compactification of XX, ω\omega the point at infinity of X′X'; for every closed subset AA of XX, let A′=A∪{ω}A' = A \cup \{\omega\}. Show that the mapping A↦A′A \mapsto A' is an isomorphism of the uniform space F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) defined in a) onto the subspace of F(X′)\mathfrak{F}(X') formed by the closed subsets containing ω\omega (make use of b)). Deduce from this that F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) is compact (cf. GT, II, §4, Exer. 15).
