Exercise 4, § 5

Integration, VIII, p. 73

Let GG be a locally compact group that is not generated by any compact subset of GG, and let HH be a discrete subgroup of GG such that G/HG/H is compact. Show that HH cannot be generated by a finite number of elements, but the normalized Haar measure α0\alpha_0 of HH belongs to the closure in Γ0\Gamma^0 of the set of α\alpha such that ∥μα∥=+∞\| \mu_\alpha \| = +\infty (consider the normalized Haar measures of the subgroups of HH that are generated by a finite number of elements).
