Exercise 5, § 5

Integration, VIII, p. 73

Let GG be the discrete group that is the direct sum of an infinite sequence (Gn)(G_n) of subgroups with two elements, and let pnp_n be the projection of GG onto GnG_n. Set Hn=pn‾(e)H_n = \overline{p_n}(e), and let αn\alpha_n be the normalized Haar measure of HnH_n. If α\alpha is the normalized Haar measure of GG, show that in Γc0\Gamma_c^0 the sequence (αn)(\alpha_n) converges to α\alpha but that ∥μαn∥=2\| \mu_{\alpha_n} \| = 2 and ∥μα∥=1\| \mu_\alpha \| = 1.
