Suppose that KK is algebraically closed. Let gg be a nilpotent Lie KK-algebra. Let ρ\rho be a finite-dimensional representation of gg on a vector space VV. For every linear form λ\lambda on gg, let VλV^\lambda be the vector subspace of VV consisting of the ξ∈V\xi \in V such that, for all x∈gx \in g, (ρ(x)−λ(x)I)nξ=0(\rho(x) - \lambda(x)I)^n \xi = 0 for sufficiently large nn.

(a) The VλV^\lambda are stable under ρ(g)\rho(g) and the sum of the VλV^\lambda is direct. (Use Exercise 22 of § 4.)

(b) We have V=∑VλV = \sum V^\lambda. (If each ρ(x)\rho(x) has a single eigenvalue, V=Vλ0V = V^{\lambda_0} by Corollary 2 to Theorem 1. If ρ(x0)\rho(x_0) has at least two distinct eigenvalues, VV is the direct sum of two non-trivial subspaces which are stable under φ(g)\varphi(g). Then argue by induction on the dimension of V.)
