Let gg be a Lie Algebra and D\mathfrak{D} the Lie algebra of derivations of gg. For gg to be characteristically nilpotent, it is necessary and sufficient that D\mathfrak{D} be nilpotent and that dim⁡g>1\dim g > 1. (To see that the condition is sufficient, write gg as a sum of subspaces gλg^\lambda, applying Exercise 12 to the identity mapping of D\mathfrak{D}. Show that [gλ,gμ]⊂gλ+μ[g^\lambda, g^\mu] \subset g^{\lambda+\mu} and that each gλg^\lambda is an ideal of gg. Deduce that gλg^\lambda is commutative for λ≠0\lambda \neq 0. Using again the fact that D\mathfrak{D} is nilpotent, show that g=g0g = g^0 if dim⁡g>1\dim g > 1. Otherwise g=g0×hg = g^0 \times h, where hh is commutative. Show first that dim⁡h≤1\dim h \leq 1. If dim⁡h=1\dim h = 1, note that there would exist a derivation D of gg such that D(g0)={0}D(g^0) = \{0\} and D(h)D(h) is contained in the centre of g0g^0 (§ 4, Exercise 8 (a)).)
