Exercise 9, § 5

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 100

Let gg be a Lie algebra, rr its radical, nn its largest nilpotent ideal and DD a derivation of gg. Show that Dg∩r⊂n\mathscr{D}g \cap r \subset n. (Let dd be the Lie algebra of derivations of gg and r′r' its radical. If x∈gx \in g is such that Dx∈rDx \in r, then

ad(Dx)=[D,ad x]∈Dd∩r′ \mathrm{ad}(Dx) = [D, \mathrm{ad}\, x] \in \mathscr{D}d \cap r'

(Corollary 2 to Proposition 5), hence ad(Dx)\mathrm{ad}(Dx) is nilpotent (Theorem 1) and hence Dx∈nDx \in n.)
