Let gg be a Lie algebra, rr its radical and DD a derivation of gg. (a) If D(r)={0}D(r) = \{0\}, DD is inner. (Let cc be the centralizer of rr in gg. The adjoint representation of gg defines a representation x∗↦ρ(x∗)x^* \mapsto \rho(x^*) of g∗=g/rg^* = g/r on cc. On the other hand, [D(g),r]⊂D([g,r])+[g,D(r)]={0}[D(g), r] \subset D([g, r]) + [g, D(r)] = \{0\}, hence D(g)⊂cD(g) \subset c and hence DD defines a linear mapping D∗:g∗→cD^*: g^* \to c. Show that

D∗([x∗,y∗])=ρ(x∗)D∗y∗−ρ(y∗)D∗x∗ D^*([x^*, y^*]) = \rho(x^*)D*y^* - \rho(y^*)D*x^*
for all x∗,y∗x^*, y^* in g∗g^*. Deduce that there exists a∈ca \in c such that D∗x∗=ρ(x∗)aD^*x^* = \rho(x^*)a for all x∗∈g∗x^* \in g^* (cf. no. 2, Remark 2), whence Dx=[x,a]Dx = [x, a] for all x∈gx \in g.) (b) If DD coincides on rr with an inner derivation of gg, DD is inner. (Apply (a).)
