Exercise 14, § 6

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 104

Let XX be a nilpotent matrix in gl(n,K)\mathfrak{gl}(n, K). Show that there exist in gl(n,K)\mathfrak{gl}(n, K) two other matrices Y,HY, H such that [H,X]=X, [H,Y]=−Y, [X,Y]=H[H, X] = X,\ [H, Y] = -Y,\ [X, Y] = H. (Argue by induction on nn, using the Jordan form of XX; thus reduce it to the case where X=E12+E23+⋯+En−1,nX = E_{12} + E_{23} + \cdots + E_{n-1,n}; then take YY to be a combination of the Ek,k−1E_{k,k-1} and HH a combination of the Ejj′E_{jj'}.)
